Houston Stars looks to build on momentum created from Upward Stars…
We are excited to open a new chapter as we venture out as Houston Stars for the upcoming 2019-20 Volleyball Season. This change comes as we have communicated with Upward Sports regarding the Upward Stars program and future goals for both our Houston club and the organization as a whole. In Spring of 2019, Upward decided to phase out their “Stars” program across the country in roughly 5 locations. We had been part of that program since our inception in 2015. This is a good change and will allow us to keep the aspects that made us great as Upward Stars but open up new opportunities for us as Houston Stars Volleyball Club.
Here is a little current and past history on our club.
New for 2019-20 – We are looking to increase to 20 teams for the Houston area. We have seen GREAT growth in our girls program and we are looking to expand on the success we saw in our boys program as well. This includes a new facility and an expanded presence in the NW/ Cypress area. We are currently renovating a 16,000 sq ft facility that will allow us to offer more opportunities to more players across Houston. It gives us a facility that we can use for practice, training and tournaments. It’s a nice space for us and will be primarily for our Adidas and NW area teams. We will still have teams which operate primarily out of the Memorial area at the 16U level and below. Check out our Registration page for more info on our upcoming tryouts and other programs.
We look forward to some great partnerships we are entering into with this upcoming season. We work with the best companies in the market to provide some powerful resources to help our teams compete, train and be at their best. Look for great things to come from our partners such as: Adidas, League Apps, Blazer Media, Hudl, Sports Recruits, Houston’s First Baptist Church, Star Sports Center, Baden and others. Being a part of Houston Stars will be exciting and engaging for many years to come.
2018-19 – We had a great finish to our 4th season. Our 17 National team wrapped up at AAU National Championships in Orlando, Florida. They competed well in the Premier division. We also saw our 14U, 15U and 16U teams finish strong at the AAU Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. This season was great for so many of our teams who won medals and competed in the top tournaments in Houston, the region and nationally. This was our first season adding a Boys volleyball team and we saw GREAT success with them. They won the Tulsa SW Boys Tour Stop and were competitive throughout the season. They showed the most growth of any of the teams they competed against and made their name known in the Puerto Rico Jeep championships.
2017-18 – Our 3rd year was an exciting one. We had 12 girls volleyball teams and represented well as we expanded our line-up of national level tournaments. This was our first season having a team qualify (16 National) and we had many other successes throughout the club. This was a big leap for us going from 8 to 12 teams but we were pleased with the growth of GREAT families within our club. We also increase our community service presence and added 3 great ministries that our teams were able to participate in and give back to their communities. We saw what it meant to have an impact “On and Off the Court.” This was the year that Director Leon Blazer took over the reigns of Upward Stars Houston and saw tremendous growth in his first year at the helm.
2016-2017 – Year two was a big step as we changed some of our branding, colors and uniform details. We didn’t just train like a top club we started to look like one. This was the first year of taking teams out of the state to compete and we had two teams finish their seasons at the AAU National Championships in Orlando, FL. We almost doubled our numbers moving from 57 to 94 athletes within our club. We added great coaches, many of whom are still with us today (Zshanelle, Kayle, Ashley, Courtney). We expanded our training methods and started to be seen as a competitive top level club.
2015-2016 – David Bundrick and Leon Blazer joined forces to create Upward Stars Houston, a part of the Upward Sports national organization. Upward Stars Houston was created to be a unique travel team experience in volleyball. Our goal was to have an impact that extends beyond just a ball and a court. We poured greatly into the lives of our athletes and challenged them to not just be a great volleyball player, but to show greatness in all aspects of what they do. We want them to be noticed in whatever they do: On and Off the Court. We want to have a club that can be used as a ministry tool for our athletes and to “Promote Discovery of Jesus through Sports.” It was the beginning of what would be an incredible impact across the city of Houston.
