First Contact

Player serving

Program Overview

The First Contact program is designed to give young players their first exposure to the game of volleyball in a fun, encouraging, and development-focused environment. This program introduces Kindergarten through 4th Grade players to the fundamentals of volleyball while keeping the sessions engaging and accessible for beginners.

The First Contact program emphasizes the key skills of the game’s opening actions—serving, passing, and digging—while also giving players opportunities to explore hitting and setting. All activities are built around age-appropriate games and drills, helping players learn the importance of the first contact in a way that is both educational and enjoyable.

To celebrate their start in volleyball, all new players receive a free volleyball and a t-shirt. Many participants from the First Contact program continue on into other Houston Stars programs, making this a perfect first step into the volleyball pathway.

The clinic is offered on Tuesday evenings, making it easy for families to participate, and registration fills quickly. Bring a friend and join us for the upcoming Houston Stars Fall First Contact Program!

Youth Programs Director: Rachel Thompson

As a native Houstonian, Rachel began her athletic journey playing any sport she could in the Southwest side of town. While attending Lamar High School, her passion for volleyball intensified and she began playing competitively her Sophomore year at Texas Tornados volleyball club. Her senior year she received a full ride scholarship to the University of Memphis. Though recruited as a middle, she made her rounds as an outside, right side and defensive specialist throughout her career as a Memphis Tiger.

She started coaching at the age of 21 and most recently has been the Volleyball Program Director at The Saint Constantine School where she coaches the Women’s Varsity Team. With a vision for growth and community, the participation skyrocketed from 16 to 60 student athletes in just a couple of years including the addition of a Men’s Varsity Team.

Her mission for the Houston Stars Youth Development Program is to establish strength through fundamentals, build skills through mechanical training and inspire the upcoming generations of volleyball players. She is excited to bring her ever-evolving knowledge of the game to the Houston Stars legacy.
